Leader notes
LINKS
Here are some links I mentioned in my talk.
How to Lead a Culture of Confession: 4 part video training I did on how to be the type of person that someone would feel comfortable opening up to.
The Surprising Effects of Loneliness on Health: I mentioned in my sermon the rising loneliness epidemic and the effects it has on us. This New York Times article is one of my sources.
Be the Help: I mentioned a quote from Rick Warren about how we should stop saying “let me know if there’s anything I can do.” I wrote about that quote and link to the the full sermon on this blog.
Being an Anchor | a lesson from FAILING FAITH: I dive deeper into that quote about being an anchor for someone dealing with a tragedy.
S.M.A.R.T. Goals: I briefly mentioned this concept but here’s an article that really unpacks what it is and how to use it.
The Power of Vulnerability TED TALK: Brene Brown is a shame and vulnerability researcher. I quoted this TED TALK a few times in defining what shame is and what it does to us.
Books I’d Recommend
Failing Faith: Wade Bearden walks through how his father’s cancer diagnosis brought his faith crumbling down and the journey God took him through that built it back up even stronger.
Recovering Redemption: A GREAT book to use if you’re disciplining someone and want to help them understand how God helps us to change and leave behind our sin.
When Your Twenties Are Darker Than You Expected: If you’re a young adult or there’s a young adult in your life who is really struggling, this book is great. Each chapter looks at a different challenge we can face (depression, disappointment, lust, anxiety), what it looks like in our 20s, and the answers God gives to those problems.
Scary Close: Donald Miller’s incredibly personal memoir about finally being comfortable with vulnerability and the importance of opening up.
Uncomfortable — The Awkward and Essential Challenge of Christian Community: You’ll never find a perfect church. There’s always going to be some parts of your church that make you uncomfortable. This book looks at how it’s good to lean into that discomfort because that’s where we’ll grow closer to God.
The Power of Habit: I learned SO MUCH reading this. A journalist shares the results of scientific research over the las few decades and explains what a habit is, how they affect our lives, and how we can change them.
