Looking Back

Leading up to this month I shared a couple memories from my last 10 years of performing as a comedian. I wanted to look back on where I came from before looking ahead at WHAT’S NEXT.

Right now what’s next is creating resources on confession that can reach far beyond my live shows. In order to do that I need your support. That’s why I have my Patreon.

I started doing stand-up my senior year of high school. In the beginning I was TERRIBLE! I didn’t know how to write a joke. I bombed all the time. But for some reason, even though I sucked so bad at it, I still loved performing. • It took me 2 years to start writing jokes I liked. It took me 5 years to find my voice on stage. Now it’s been 10 FREAKING YEARS since I started (I’m very old). Excited for what’s next.

In 2016 I told the internet that if anyone could get at least 20 people to show up, I’d do a comedy show in their living room. I spent that fall performing in strangers’ houses. Some of my favorite memories are the surprising and crazy stories audience members told during the shows. It was the best. Can’t wait for WHAT’S NEXT.

4 years ago I started speaking in school assemblies with the North Texas Youth Alive team. I’ve been able to talk to students about bullying, social media, suicide, and following you dreams. I never would have thought this would become such a big part of my life. So excited for what’s next.

While putting this post together I realized I had one more memory I never shared. This is dumb and not a big deal to anyone else except me.

In college I became the director and head writer of a sketch comedy show the school put on twice a year. Since I was in charge I finally got make a lifelong dream a reality: I hosted the whole show with a puppet sidekick. It was a moment of pure joy. Look at that puppet. Look at the pure joy oozing out of me. He was my best friend.
